Hammarhead Industries Duomatic

Rad Bikes from Philly

Hammarhead Industries is a custom motorcycle outfit based out of Philly. I’ve talked about them before, a few of my friends work for the company, and they churn out bikes that are nothing short of impressive. Speaking of bikes as in bicycles, Hammarhead has now put out their first one called the Duomatic. Below is a photo of my good friend Maxine riding the sucker into oblivion. My understanding is that they’re very much sold out but maybe you can get in touch and still try and snag one (via Cycle EXIF).

Tenue de Nimes Big John

Natural Indigo Selvedge Denim

I dig the faded indigo, I did the yellow selvedge line, and I dig the fit. Check it. They’re real slick. (pictured with my favorite boots, the Red Wing Iron Ranger).

Blue Highway Denim

Straight Outta’ Sweden

These dudes look batshit crazy but their denim looks great. All the way from Sweden. This is worth a look, I promise (via Cool Hunting).

General Quarters

Los Angeles

Mr. Williams at A Continuous Lean did a nice profile on General Quarters, a slick shop in Los Angeles. I tried to do a writeup on these guys while I was out there this past summer but they’re very busy and very difficult to get in touch with. Nice photos and it looks like the selection at the shop has bloomed quite nicely (via A Continuous Lean).

Years

The Wooden Record Player

I don’t remember where I saw this so I apologize for not giving credit where credit is due. This is a video of a record player that plays rings of wood and translates it to music. My hunch is that it takes a special plate of wood to do this but it’s awesome and incredibly haunting. Check it out.

Disneyland 1957

Vintage Video from Just After Opening

This is seriously worth a look. Awesome vintage video of the park right after it opened (via Devour).

Prime Burger NYC

Get Your Diner-Lust On

Cool video on Prime Burger, a very vintage diner-esque joint in NYC (via Devour).

Inquiries & Responses vol. 07: Ryan Berger of Simple Threads

Posted on January 24, 2012

This is the seventh in a series of interviews with people who have a keen interest in menswear, style, design, or generally cool stuff. Most of these people are doing something of great note that you should absolutely take a look at. If you haven’t heard of Simple Threads then it’s time to expand your blogroll. Ryan’s been dishing up stellar photography paired with great anecdotes about products, travels, and brands since 2010 and has been growing within the community with each passing month. The dude can write, which is important, but what really makes Simple Threads stand out is the photography; I guarantee at some point you’ve seen his signature split-toned early-evening-sunset-soaked photos of his growing collection of great American made clothing. I spent a few hours with him and his fiancé in New York City at the Pop-Up Flea (he provided the photos for the linked post) this past fall when we decided to do this interview. He’s an all-around genuine guy who’s got some great things to say about thinking for yourself, buying American-made, and gives a nice rundown of some brands he’s very excited about. Click below to read the entire interview as well as view some great photos from Ryan.

The Pop-Up Flea: A Recap

Posted on December 6, 2011

I spent about 18 hours in NYC this weekend for the A Continuous Goldberg production of the Pop-Up Flea which takes place annually somewhere in lower Manhattan. I made it up last year which was an awesome experience and went back a little better armed with what I wanted to do while I was in the area. Unfortunately in my rush to leave my house in Philadelphia around 4:45am, I inadvertently left my DSLR on my desk so all images in this post are graciously donated by Mr. Ryan Berger of Simple Threads whom I spent some time with on the day of the Flea.

The brand representation at the event was excellent including the likes of Levi’s Heritage, L.L. Bean‘s vintage line, Hickoree’s Hard Goods, Oak Street Bootmakers, Billykirk, Tanner Goods, Tellason Denim, and many more. The beauty of this event is twofold; smalltime bloggers like myself can go and meet people we read and write about on a regular basis while knocking out a large chunk of our holiday shopping in one fell swoop. I got to spend a little time chatting with Pete Searson and Tony Patella of Tellason who so graciously donated  an old pair of their jeans for our Natural Process Denim show coming up in January as well as the gentlemen behind Hickoree’s both at the Flea and in their new Brooklyn brick-and-mortar shop. I also got to finally meet up with Ryan of Simple Threads and kick it in a few shops around town with him and his fiancee and their city guide Drew. If anything it’s a good way to solidify connections by making your e-mail exchange face-to-face. Click below to see the rest of the photos of the event courtesy, again, of Simple Threads. I work with a fixed width theme. This means that the beautiful photos aren’t going to show up in their entirety due to some crap planning (will take care of this soon). To see the entire photo, open in a new tab. Seriously, it’s worth it. The photos are gorgeous and my theme doesn’t do them justice. There are plenty more on his site linked above.

Thanksgiving

Posted on November 30, 2011

I hope everyone’s Thanksgiving went very well and you got to spend as much time with whoever you wished as much you had initially hoped. Holidays are always difficult especially returning home from out of town when you’re juggling visiting times with family, friends you haven’t seen in years, significant others, dogs, etc. Making time for everyone is something I’ve learned over the years simply cannot be done whilst keeping your sanity. So stick with the people who matter most.

Here’s a little photo recap of my time in Missouri over the holiday. Most of these are either of my dog, Oliver, or of writing sessions for a new record I’m working on. Click on each photo to enlarge. You can follow me on Instagram (which is how half of these were made) at @alexfrankel.

Philadelphia Bike Expo Recap

Posted on November 2, 2011

The Philly Bike Expo wrapped up successfully this past weekend at the 23rd Street Armory. The weather made things weird having a mix of folks on bikes in cycling gear and people wearing rain boots and winter parkas with sub 40 degree temperatures and steady snow on Saturday but the event carried on bravely nonetheless with what appeared to be a good turnout. I snapped a few photos of Folk Engineered’s most recent project, the Oregon Manifest, a few other vendors’ wares (including the front of a Bishop bike which I had featured on the A.C. tumblr before) and chatted up Michael Firn from Brooks England for quite some time. I snapped these with the iPhone which doesn’t do a great job but I did my best. Click any photo to enlarge.

You can read the original interview with Bina Bilenky, organizer of the whole shebang, over here.
