A New Home

Just an administrative note:

In case you hadn’t already noticed, yesterday we switched over to http://www.theamericanclasic.org, our very own domain name. This marks the beginning of a few changes around here including some upcoming things like the possibility of a guest column, a few more interviews, and quite possibly the launch of The American Classic Shop, at long last. A few of these are further off than need be noted but I like to keep you all in the loop.

That being said, if you have a product and would like it featured in the shop, please find your preferred method of contact here.

Inquiries & Responses vol. 02: John Mulhouse of ‘City of Dust’

Posted on June 1, 2011

This is the second in a series of interviews with people who have a keen interest in menswear, style, design, or generally cool stuff. Most of these people are doing something of great note that you should absolutely take a look at.

‘City of Dust’ is a blog chronicling, in the author’s words, “the lost and wondrous wreckage of America”. I found John Mulhouse’s page via Reddit, of all places, and was immediately fascinated with both his incredible photography and the stories he told to accompany his images. His ability to weave a vivid portrait of the bleaker parts of the American landscape is astounding and his documentation of seemingly unknown historical events is second to none. As long as I can remember, my friends and I have always explored abandoned places for some semblance of understanding as to what happened there and what tales lie behind the mysterious lost structures. We spoke in May 2011. Click below to view several of his beautiful photographs and to read the full interview.

Notes from the Field: Local35 in Portland, OR

Posted on May 29, 2011

A good friend of mine, Kasey Klimes, who runs the fantastic urban sustainability blog Secret Republic sent me a few photos from his recent trip to Portland, OR where he visited a few different shops along his way. The first one he sent me was Local35 who carries brands like A.P.C., Tanner Goods, Billykirk, Vanishing Elephant, Nudie Jeans, etc. Their site isn’t terribly descriptive so I figured I’d let the photos speak for themselves. If you’re in the area, it’s probably worth a look. Some stuff for the ladies towards the bottom there, or if you’re a gent and into wooden rings and jewelry it could certainly be up your alley as well. For you nerds out there, all photos were shot with a Canon t3i w/ a 50mm f1.8 lens and they’re pretty damn good so click on them to enlarge.

Wrangling Sharks

Posted on May 24, 2011

Sorry for the absence, I spent the past weekend wrangling sharks with friends in Cape May. Good things coming soon including a new interview. In the meantime, enjoy a picture of this dogfish we found being given a Dogfish Head IPA (really it was a Yards ESA but we can pretend).

MS & Co. Selvedge Denim Sleeve

Posted on May 14, 2011

I received a package from MS & Co. yesterday containing 1 iPhone 4 selvedge denim sleeve, as mentioned a few days ago in ‘On the Lookout vol. 1’. I’ve enjoyed it quite a bit so far, as a new iPhone 4 user and having not wanted to conceal the beauty of the phone by putting an ugly bulky case on it. This is a great alternative for people who know that they take care of their stuff. If you’re that person who’s throwing their phone into the bottom of a bag or tossing it across your car, this probably ain’t gonna’ work for you. This provides a little protection from drops and bumps while mostly saving the glass front and back from a certain scratchy demise. Anyway, I’d recommend it. It’s simple and for all you denim heads out there, this thing will fix your jonze for some real American made Cone White Oak Denim. That’s exactly what it is.
