Notes From the Field: Wardrobe 19 in Copenhagen, Denmark

Posted on October 24, 2011

A good friend of mine, Kasey Klimes who has guest posted here before, is traveling/working in Europe currently and sends me photo updates every once in a while of things I might like. Today’s comes from Copenhagen where he discovered a shop called Wardrobe 19 featuring presumably mostly menswear goods. A visit to their website tells you not a whole lot about what they do there and their brands list is clearly either out of date or has some very eclectic items on it. Judging by the photos that Kasey sent over, I’d say they’ve updated their stuff and currently stock some things worth checking out.

Regardless, Kasey’s photos are awesome and I’m jonzing for one of those duck cloth Sandqvist bags right now (see above). As Kasey said in his e-mail to me, it seems like they’re taking notes from what many American shops are doing to feature smaller brands making higher quality goods. If you ever find yourself in Copenhagen, among the other ridiculously cool design related stuff to do there, make sure to swing by this shop. Thanks to Kasey for the submission. The Standard Relay: Prince Hat designs, J.W. Hulme x National Parks, Saul Bass, and Malibu 1965 by A.C.L.

Prince Hat Designs -

Prince Hat is Patrik Svensson’s graphic design and illustration company based out of Sweden. I know very little about the gentleman but he seems to do good work. I was drawn in by his literal typography titles for books, TV, and film. He also does some pretty slick looking band posters which surprises me the the hasn’t blown up more in America. Check out his site for the full shebang but I’ve included a few photos of a band poster and two literal typography posters for shows created by two of my former employees: Weeds & Lost. See if you can figure them out.

J.W. Hulme x National Park Foundation -

Found this little article via Selectism. Unfortunately you won’t be seeing Park Rangers toting these things around any time soon; too bad too because these pieces are gorgeous. The good news is that if you were looking at shelling out for some J.W. Hulme wares to begin with, now for this particular collection a portion of your purchase will go to the official charity for the National Park Foundation and we all know how much they need it. So check it out and if you happen to pick one up, shoot us some photos.

A Life in Film & Design: Saul Bass -

This one’s a little belated but still looks incredible nonetheless.  A book is coming out in November about Saul Bass, the man who really made an image for 1950s and 60s design on film posters and book covers. I think one of my favorite parts about his story is collaborating with his wife to achieve maximum minimalism but his designs are awe inspiring in their own right so by all means click on over and consider dropping the $75 on the book. Or just read about him. It’s worth it. (via Cool Hunting).

Malibu 1965 by A Continuous Lean -

A last minute addition to this week’s collection, Michael Williams over at A.C.L. has put up a very nice grouping of vintage videos of Paul Newman, Jane Fonda, Kirk Douglas, Anthony Perkins, and Judy Garland kicking it back in the 60’s in Malibu. Definitely worth a look.

Notes from the Field: Derringer Cycles in Los Angeles, CA.

Posted on September 1, 2011

I’ve always had an interest in vintage motorcycles as well as general cycling culture so when Derringer Cycles blew up on the internet a few weeks ago, they were tugging at my creative heartstrings. A mix of motorcycle and cycling culture crossed with excellent design principles. I found out the company is based out of Los Angeles and did everything I could to get in for a few minutes with Adrian Van Anz, Derringer’s founder and designer. Earlier this week we met in his storefront on West 3rd Street near West Hollywood and I snapped a few photos of the shop. Make sure to click photos to enlarge them. Click below to view the whole article and photos.

Cruising Carmageddon

Posted on July 26, 2011

Things have been pretty quiet around these parts these days. We’re working on lining up some cool things for the end of summer and beginning of fall as the site shifts from Los Angeles mode to Philadelphia mode. Pictured above is the interior of a 1954 Chevrolet Bel Air, restored to mint condition. I spent my Carmageddon weekend cruising around Palm Desert in the backseat of this beautiful automobile. Hope your Carmageddon was as relaxing, to all you L.A. readers out there.

Notes from the Field: Local35 in Portland, OR

Posted on May 29, 2011

A good friend of mine, Kasey Klimes, who runs the fantastic urban sustainability blog Secret Republic sent me a few photos from his recent trip to Portland, OR where he visited a few different shops along his way. The first one he sent me was Local35 who carries brands like A.P.C., Tanner Goods, Billykirk, Vanishing Elephant, Nudie Jeans, etc. Their site isn’t terribly descriptive so I figured I’d let the photos speak for themselves. If you’re in the area, it’s probably worth a look. Some stuff for the ladies towards the bottom there, or if you’re a gent and into wooden rings and jewelry it could certainly be up your alley as well. For you nerds out there, all photos were shot with a Canon t3i w/ a 50mm f1.8 lens and they’re pretty damn good so click on them to enlarge.
