The Standard Relay: Jack Spade’s Scavenger Hunt, The Monitaly Field Jacket, Sushi Girl, and more.

Posted on September 6, 2011

FREE/MAN Brand's New Products -

The dudes over at FREE/MAN picked up some Hill Side stuff this week in their newly opened shop that looks really awesome. Check that out while you’re looking at their other collaborations that amaze me on a daily basis.

The Monitaly Field Jacket -

This thing looks pretty rad especially if you’re going to be out in those cold Western mornings any time soon. I’m visiting areas around the midwest this week and already wishing I had one of these to throw on in the mornings. Fall is nigh and winter cometh. Be ready. (via selectism).

Sushi Girl Trailer -

Listen, I know you can find trailers on your own. Everyone’s got their resources to find the latest trailer to come out for that one script that got buzz two years ago from some college student. But you probably haven’t seen this one yet. In fact people at my office haven’t even seen this one until a few days ago and they’re on the forefront of most things rad. Check it. The backing track rules and the cast is pretty interesting (read: Mark Hamil). Make sure you watch it in HD so that Roxy Music can tear your ears apart in the best way possible.

Jack Spade FNO Scavenger Hunt: Clues & Booze -

I’m assuming this is public knowledge because it’s sponsored by Heineken and Bombay Sapphire and it popped up in my inbox without any confidentiality warning SO if you’re in the NYC area, take note of this event. You have basically no notice; this event is on September 8th (two days from now) from 6-9pm. You can either do it in SoHo or in the West Village. Click either of the previous links there to RSVP at your preferred location. Here are the exact addresses:

SoHo: 56 Greene Street NYC 10012 (212)-625-1820

West Village: 400 Bleecker Street NYC 10014

This thing could win you cash monies to spend at Jack Spade!  Your team can consist of up to 3 people and each person will be rewarded $200 assuming you win. Check it out, if I were back east right now I absolutely would be there.

Notes from the Field: Derringer Cycles in Los Angeles, CA.

Posted on September 1, 2011

I’ve always had an interest in vintage motorcycles as well as general cycling culture so when Derringer Cycles blew up on the internet a few weeks ago, they were tugging at my creative heartstrings. A mix of motorcycle and cycling culture crossed with excellent design principles. I found out the company is based out of Los Angeles and did everything I could to get in for a few minutes with Adrian Van Anz, Derringer’s founder and designer. Earlier this week we met in his storefront on West 3rd Street near West Hollywood and I snapped a few photos of the shop. Make sure to click photos to enlarge them. Click below to view the whole article and photos.

On the Lookout vol. 02

Posted on August 29, 2011

This is a collection of a few brands I’ve been getting excited about lately. Some are new and notable, many are older and simply something to take a look at if you’re interested. This grouping includes Opinel knives from France, FREE/MAN brand, and The Quality Mending Co.

Unfortunatley, due to technological difficulties there will be no Standard Relay this week. You can read the first and second editions of Standard Relay by clicking here and here respectively. Click below to read the whole article.

The Standard Relay: Rabbit Island, Tiny Chi-Town, Red Wing Shoes, Brooklyn Cruiser, & the Quoddy Workshop

Posted on August 22, 2011

Rabbit Island -

This is a bizarre story about a little island in Lake Superior purchased by a few guys who had a vision of building a small artists collective and shelters on the island. That being said, they’ve got a pretty rad site and they have an architecture competition going on currently. I know at least several of you who are architects so consider adding this one to your portfolio.

Tiny Chicago -

I’m sure for at least some of you this will be the first tilt-shift video you’ve ever seen, so enjoy it.

Red Wing Shoes Amsterdam -

To commemorate their anniversary in Amsterdam, Red Wing Shoes has put out a video of shots of the store. Pretty well done, worth a glance. They also used the opportunity to announce the launch of a (new?) online store coming soon.

Brooklyn Cruiser -

I should have just written this up when I had the chance last week but decided to sit on the article until today. It’s been getting buzz all over the internet for it’s sharp looks but mainly it’s ridiculously reasonable price. You can check out the article in Gear Patrol by clicking here.

Quoddy Video -

The workshop behind the legendary footwear. If you’ve heard of them or have any interest in the manufacturing process of fine goods, you should check this video out.

Inquiries & Responses vol. 05: Portland General Store

Posted on August 17, 2011

This is the fifth in a series of interviews with people who have a keen interest in menswear, style, design, or generally cool stuff. Most of these people are doing something of great note that you should absolutely take a look at.

If my memory serves me correctly, the first time I saw Portland General Store‘s wares was in late 2010 at Michael Williams’ (of A Continuous Lean) Pop-Up Flea in New York City. I believe they were featured at the Hickoree’s Hard Goods table along with several other brands that Hickoree’s was carrying at the time. I got my hands on some of their products initially just a few weeks ago at Steven Alan’s Anex on Abbott Kinney in Venice Beach and liked the oddness of the scents they were using. Their image has certainly changed since I first saw them last year but they carry the same great products with the addition of a few new lines. I spoke with Lisa Brodar, the public face of PGS, via e-mail over the past few weeks and we wound up with a nice, brief conversation to publish. Click below to read the interview and see more photos of their brand new labels.
