Self Edge x Leather Soul Alden Boots

Posted on February 14, 2012

I spoke with Andrew Chen (who’s got a very nice pair of jeans in the Natural Process show) of Self Edge and 3sixteen last week about a new project Self Edge was working on. It’s a very rad collaboration with Leather Soul and Self Edge to make a very sharp pair of Aldens with a faux toe-cap and an off-white sole. If the photos don’t do it for ya, maybe the $495 price tag to one a 1 in 100 piece of collaborative history (100 made of each of the two colors) will. Check out the very slick pictures and get ready for it’s launch in Los Angeles and Waikiki on February 18th. All photos are courtesy of Andrew Chen, Self Edge, and Leather Soul.

The Pop-Up Flea: A Recap

Posted on December 6, 2011

I spent about 18 hours in NYC this weekend for the A Continuous Goldberg production of the Pop-Up Flea which takes place annually somewhere in lower Manhattan. I made it up last year which was an awesome experience and went back a little better armed with what I wanted to do while I was in the area. Unfortunately in my rush to leave my house in Philadelphia around 4:45am, I inadvertently left my DSLR on my desk so all images in this post are graciously donated by Mr. Ryan Berger of Simple Threads whom I spent some time with on the day of the Flea.

The brand representation at the event was excellent including the likes of Levi’s Heritage, L.L. Bean‘s vintage line, Hickoree’s Hard Goods, Oak Street Bootmakers, Billykirk, Tanner Goods, Tellason Denim, and many more. The beauty of this event is twofold; smalltime bloggers like myself can go and meet people we read and write about on a regular basis while knocking out a large chunk of our holiday shopping in one fell swoop. I got to spend a little time chatting with Pete Searson and Tony Patella of Tellason who so graciously donated  an old pair of their jeans for our Natural Process Denim show coming up in January as well as the gentlemen behind Hickoree’s both at the Flea and in their new Brooklyn brick-and-mortar shop. I also got to finally meet up with Ryan of Simple Threads and kick it in a few shops around town with him and his fiancee and their city guide Drew. If anything it’s a good way to solidify connections by making your e-mail exchange face-to-face. Click below to see the rest of the photos of the event courtesy, again, of Simple Threads. I work with a fixed width theme. This means that the beautiful photos aren’t going to show up in their entirety due to some crap planning (will take care of this soon). To see the entire photo, open in a new tab. Seriously, it’s worth it. The photos are gorgeous and my theme doesn’t do them justice. There are plenty more on his site linked above.

Philadelphia Bike Expo Recap

Posted on November 2, 2011

The Philly Bike Expo wrapped up successfully this past weekend at the 23rd Street Armory. The weather made things weird having a mix of folks on bikes in cycling gear and people wearing rain boots and winter parkas with sub 40 degree temperatures and steady snow on Saturday but the event carried on bravely nonetheless with what appeared to be a good turnout. I snapped a few photos of Folk Engineered’s most recent project, the Oregon Manifest, a few other vendors’ wares (including the front of a Bishop bike which I had featured on the A.C. tumblr before) and chatted up Michael Firn from Brooks England for quite some time. I snapped these with the iPhone which doesn’t do a great job but I did my best. Click any photo to enlarge.

You can read the original interview with Bina Bilenky, organizer of the whole shebang, over here.

Notes From the Field: Wardrobe 19 in Copenhagen, Denmark

Posted on October 24, 2011

A good friend of mine, Kasey Klimes who has guest posted here before, is traveling/working in Europe currently and sends me photo updates every once in a while of things I might like. Today’s comes from Copenhagen where he discovered a shop called Wardrobe 19 featuring presumably mostly menswear goods. A visit to their website tells you not a whole lot about what they do there and their brands list is clearly either out of date or has some very eclectic items on it. Judging by the photos that Kasey sent over, I’d say they’ve updated their stuff and currently stock some things worth checking out.

Regardless, Kasey’s photos are awesome and I’m jonzing for one of those duck cloth Sandqvist bags right now (see above). As Kasey said in his e-mail to me, it seems like they’re taking notes from what many American shops are doing to feature smaller brands making higher quality goods. If you ever find yourself in Copenhagen, among the other ridiculously cool design related stuff to do there, make sure to swing by this shop. Thanks to Kasey for the submission. Inquiries & Responses vol. 06: Teppei Teranishi of Truman Handcrafted [UPDATED] Now Teranishi Handcrafted

Posted on October 10, 2011

This is the sixth in a series of interviews with people who have a keen interest in menswear, style, design, or generally cool stuff. Most of these people are doing something of great note that you should absolutely take a look at.
Somehow I managed to catch Teppei Teranishi of Truman Handcrafted and (rock group) Thrice fame when he wasn’t on the road, at a venue, or knee deep in some other variety of project. I didn’t want to pester the guy too much because he’s very busy and frankly, his work speaks for itself; extremely high-quality American-made products that are styled well and are unbelievably clean in their design. That being said this is the shortest interview done for the Inquiries & Responses series as well as the only unedited one to date.
Truman Handcrafted has this look about it and I can’t quite put my finger on it without becoming repetitive but the cleanliness of the designs really stand out to me. Nothing flashy and no ridiculous branding being shown off. The current lineup of goods includes a tote bag, iPad/laptop portfolios, an iPhone case, a variety of wallets and bracelets, and probably most impressive to me is the gorgeous journal cover. Additionally, by clicking to see the full article below you’ll get a little look at a briefcase prototype from Truman (the 1st photo). Everything’s handmade by Teppei in his home on Vashon Island, WA. where he gave us a little photo tour and answered a couple of questions. Click below to read the full interview and view the photos.
I wanted to note that Teppei has changed the name of his company to Teranishi Handcrafted. You can find his products online under that name henceforth.
