Weekend Adventures: The Art of Getting the Fuck Out Vol. 1

Posted on April 11, 2013

GTFO_masthead_wSometimes what you really need to do is get the fuck out. Pack your shit and leave for a day, a night, a weekend. Whatever. Just get away for a quick couple of (or couple dozen) hours and clear your head, find yourself, and maybe remember why you’re doing what you’re doing to begin with. These moments are as crucial to keeping you sharp on the job and in your personal affairs as they are to keeping you a sane and happy human being. Here we will document some of our weekend adventures for your viewing and reading pleasure.

The Art of Getting the Fuck Out

Vol. 01: March 15th

It’s been a rough couple of weeks here in Los Angeles. It seems like the number of cars on the road has tripled yet again, thereby increasing the number of moron drivers and hence, accidents. Getting anywhere takes forever and I find myself frequently nearly in tears, shaking the steering wheel violently as I sob my commuting woes to Ira Glass on the This American Life podcast (he’s a terrible listener). Sometimes when things get this bad, when they’re really to the point where by the time you get to the office you’re already spent, you need to get the hell out of dodge. Which is what I did this weekend. Click here to read the full article.

Field Trip: Mollusk Surf Shop

Posted on April 1, 2013

I visited Mollusk Surf Shop’s Venice Beach location a few weekends ago. I don’t surf though wish I did and wasn’t nearly cool enough to be taking photos in this place (the shopkeepers were somewhat wary of my being there) but if you do in fact surf or are marginally interested in surfing culture, this place has something to offer for you. Cool clothes, awesome art books and surfing videos, surfing gear, etc. If I were to surf, this is where I’d likely outfit myself. Their original location is in San Francisco and at one point they had one in NYC, though my understanding is that the NYC location is now closed. This is a recommended stop if you’re touring the Venice Beach area. It’s an easy one-block walk off of the famed boardwalk. Click here to see all of the images.

Introducing: The DoughBoy Watch Co.

We’d like to introduce to you a new venture from some old friends: The DoughBoy Watch Co, located right in our hometown of Philadelphia. Tom Loveland is the man behind the torch, restoring turn-of-the-century pocketwatches in the style of WWI trench watches. From DoughBoyWatchCo.com, “…since timed attacks were, well very important, being late was not a good thing.  Pocket watches were great, but pulling one out while holding a rifle was a little cumbersome.  So what was called the “trench watch” began showing up on the wrists of infantrymen on all sides.” Think you’ll be able to find batteries for your Casio after the apocalypse? Think again. These watches are as old as your Granddad and just sharp. There is a limited selection right now, and since each piece is quite literally one-of-a-kind, you would do well to keep your eyes on their shop page. This is only the beginning, however; there are whispers of high-end watches, custom leather, and much more. All in good time. Click the jump for more photos of what it takes to restore one of these beauties.

NorthernGRADE Los Angeles Is Coming

Posted on March 15, 2013

I was hanging out with our pal Karl Thoennessen from Rogue Territory last night and he mentioned that NorthenGRADE, the menswear-centric pop-up shop located frequently between Chicago and Minneapolis (though recently moving around a bit), was coming to our fair city. Wouldn’t you know it? He was right. The show carries on here in sunny Los Angeles, CA. and oh-so soon. If you’re in the area, this is probably your best bet in the next year (at least) to see anything like this happening in LA so I highly recommend going out. Brand list and info posted in the image above, abridged version below. Real deal details here.
